OUR ACTIVITIES

We do other things besides speaking!

We have various other events in our calendar quite apart from the normal club meetings.

For example, one club meeting might be devoted to a debate, and Clitheroe Speakers Club has been known to take on an outside team in a friendly contest.

Occasionally a school or other organisation might do us the honour of asking us to judge one of their speaking or debating contests. Volunteers from our more experienced members take on these tasks.

During November we commemorate the start of the Clitheroe Speakers Club in 1978 with a Charter Dinner. Organised by the Clitheroe Speakers Club, this is a very enjoyable occasion and attended by members of other speaker clubs. It is not overtly formal, and evening dress is optional. As enjoying the meal and the chance to meeting other speakers, there is some sort of entertainment.

In June we hold a walk-about treasure hunt in one of the many delightful villages in the glorious Ribble Valley. This has become very popular with other clubs in the area, and we get anything up to 50 happy wanderers, some from as far afield as Morecambe or Skipton.

Just before Christmas we have a social where members are encouraged to bring poetry, sketches, jokes, or indeed anything in a party spirit, and there is a buffet supper.

Feeling competitive? A few of our members like the thrill of combat and enter for the club speech or evaluation competitions.

The winners proceed to the next level, the area competitions, and the winners of those battle on in the district event. The survivors from all this appear in the National Speech Contest at the annual conference.
